It's not really surprising that outfits like The Pet Shop Boys became popular with suburban youth in America when they sang songs that romanticised the "dangers" and "difficulties" of the modern suburban lifestyle. I have no idea what the song means, but I've got to think that it's tongue in cheek. A song about the sinisterness (sinistry?) of suburban life can't possibly be serious, and the video with gang members and cops and dogs and creepy suburban housefronts is just strange.
From their 1986 debut album Please.
